Anyone can put lightener on hair. Not everyone can navigate the underlying pigment stages — red, orange, gold, yellow — and land on the exact shade of blonde you are going for without causing damage. If you want one recommendation: for most people asking for “lived-in blonde,” foilayage is the answer. It gives you the brightness of foils around the face and at the root with the seamless grow-out of hand-painting through the ends.

Toning is not optional, and it is not free

Lightening removes pigment. Toning puts the shade back. Without it, lightened hair is just lifted hair — which is what “brassy” actually means. Every lightening service at Reverie finishes with a toner, and the toner is priced separately, from $75. We treat it as non-negotiable rather than as an upsell, and we tell you the number before we start. Ash, icy platinum, beige, sandy, warm honey and golden blonde are all toner work.

A standalone toner or gloss refresh between appointments takes 20–30 minutes and brings the tone back when your blonde starts pulling warm. A root smudge or root melt — softening the line where your natural color meets the lightener — is a related finishing choice that buys you weeks of extra grow-out.

Blonde correction

If you are here because your blonde went wrong somewhere else — banded, patchy, orange at the mid-lengths, or the right lightness but the wrong tone — that is color correction, and it is quoted at a free consultation rather than off a price list. Correction is diagnostic work: we need to see the hair, understand what is already on it, and often stage the work across more than one session to protect its condition.

Going blonde from dark hair

Dark hair holds a great deal of underlying warmth, and removing it safely takes time. Depending on your starting level, condition and target, a significant lift may be a single long appointment or a plan across two or three sessions. We would rather tell you that at the consultation than promise platinum in one visit and compromise your hair to get there. Maintaining your blonde

• Wash less often, and in cooler water — heat opens the cuticle and tone escapes.
• Use a purple shampoo sparingly. Once a week is usually plenty; more than that can dull warm blondes and turn icy ones grey.
• Chicago has hard water. Mineral buildup is one of the most common causes of brass we see, and a chelating wash before your appointment helps.
• Book a gloss or toner refresh between lightening appointments rather than waiting for the whole color to fade.
• Bond-building treatments — K18 and similar — do meaningful work on lightened hair. We will tell you honestly whether yours needs one.
