Best Haircut in Chicago — Reverie Salon
Precision cutting from a team that wins NAHA recognitions and trains stylists in 9+ countries. Built around your hair, your face, your morning routine — never a 20-minute trim-and-go.
If you've ever left a salon thinking "this is fine, but it isn't right" — or worse, "it'll grow out" — the problem was almost never your hair. It was the cut. A great haircut requires three things almost no Chicago salon gets right at once: a real consultation that maps technique to your hair, a stylist whose cutting skill goes beyond formula, and a dry refinement that makes the cut look right at week one and week six.
That's what Reverie was built around. We're a River North studio led by Sal Misseri — 17-time NAHA honoree, three-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year finalist, and Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year. Sal personally trained every stylist on our floor through Kaizen Education, the cutting-and-color curriculum he now teaches to professional stylists in 9+ countries. The cut you book here is the same standard he teaches internationally.
Why Reverie for Your Haircut
The credentials are externally verified, not self-applied. "Award-winning" is something every salon writes on its website. Reverie's awards are dated, third-party, and specific: 17 NAHA recognitions (the only objective US hair industry awards), three Hairstylist of the Year finalist nods, Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year, Davines Global Artist status, NYFW backstage with Christian Siriano and Porsche Design. We don't lead with awards because they're impressive. We lead with them because they're how you separate a real cutting specialist from a confident generalist.
Cutting is taught here, not just performed. Sal's Kaizen Education curriculum is the only Chicago-based cutting-and-color education program taught internationally. Sydney Misseri — Artistic Director of Haircutting at Kaizen — coaches stylists across the country on advanced cutting technique. That standard cascades into every cut booked at Reverie.
Bespoke design, not a menu. A great cut starts with a real conversation. We map the cut to your face shape, hair density, growth patterns, lifestyle, and how you actually style at home — not to a reference photo of someone with completely different hair. The cut is designed for you, not for the chair next door.
Dry refinement. Wet hair lies. Cuts look one way when wet and another when dry, and the difference is where most cuts go wrong. Every Reverie cut is refined dry after the wet cut, so what you see in the mirror is what you'll have tomorrow morning.
Davines professional products, exclusively. Color is the most-cited reason for using Davines, but for cutting it matters too — every shampoo, conditioner, and finishing product used on your hair is from the same plant-based B-Corp Italian line. No surprise residue, no buildup that affects how the cut sits.
Transparent pricing. You know the number at consult, written, before any scissors touch your hair. No surprise charges, no "we'll see what it takes."
Who's Cutting Your Hair
Every cutter on our floor is senior-level and Kaizen-trained. Here are the four most-requested haircutters at Reverie.
Sal Misseri — Owner & Creative Director
17 NAHA recognitions across cutting, color, men's, and editorial. Three-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year finalist. Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year. Davines Global Artist. NYFW backstage credits. Books the Bespoke Renewal Cut — Sal's signature service — for clients who want the full unhurried experience. Read more on Sal's stylist page.
Sydney Misseri — Artistic Director of Haircutting, Kaizen Education
Sassoon-trained, with HOB Salon London experience. Trained directly with Sal for two years, then with global artists Allen Ruiz, Lupe Voss, and David Adams. As Kaizen's Artistic Director of Haircutting, she coaches stylists across the country on advanced cutting technique — and brings that same standard to Reverie's chair. Particularly strong on bobs, lobs, and precision layered cuts. Read more on Sydney's stylist page.
Sydney Goicoechea — Haircut Specialist
Kaizen-certified Haircut Specialist. Color-trained but cuts-first — books primarily for precision cuts, layered work, and grow-out-friendly shapes. The best pick if you're between styles and want a stylist who will design for the cut you're heading into, not just the one you're in today. Read more on Sydney's stylist page.
Marissa White — Curly & Coily Cutting Specialist
Reverie's go-to for curls. Cuts dry, in the curl's natural shape, with placement designed for how your hair actually moves. Trained directly by Sal to mirror his technique. If you've been told "we don't really cut curls here" elsewhere, book Marissa. Read more on Marissa's stylist page.
Other senior cutters on the floor include Lilah Al-Surakhi, Hana Gashi, and the rest of the team — every cutter trains through Kaizen Education. Take our 60-second Stylist Match quiz to be paired with the right cutter for your hair.

Cuts We Specialize In
Precision bobs & lobs
Sharp, intentional, blunt-line bobs and longer lobs. The cut where precision matters most — a few degrees off and the whole shape is wrong. Sydney Misseri and Sal are the most-requested for this category.
Long layered cuts
Movement, lightness, and shape on longer hair. We design the layers around how your hair falls naturally — not a uniform formula. Cut to grow out beautifully, so you stay in the chair every 8–10 weeks instead of every 6.
Modern shags & textured cuts
The cut having a moment — layered, lived-in, slightly undone. Done well, it photographs beautifully and styles in under five minutes. Done poorly, it just looks unfinished. Ours is the former.
Pixies & short cuts
Short cuts have nowhere to hide. We take them seriously — outline detail, the way the cut sits on your head, growth pattern accommodation. A precision pixie at Reverie is a different product from a drop-in trim.
Curly & coily cuts
Cut dry, in the curl's natural shape, by stylists trained on textured hair. Curl pattern, density, and growth direction all dictate where weight should sit. Marissa White leads this work; we cut all curl types, from 2A waves through 4C coils. More on curly hair at Reverie →
Men's cuts
Fades, tapers, textured crops, classic side parts, longer styles. Led by a team trained by Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year — Chicago's only stylist with that specific external recognition. More on men's cuts →
Transformations & major restyles
Long to short. Color-and-cut to a new identity. Pre-wedding, post-breakup, mid-rebrand. We block extra consultation time, build a plan together, and execute it the same day or across two visits if your hair needs to heal first.
Reverie vs. Other Chicago Cutting Options
vs. Chain salons (Hair Cuttery, Great Clips, etc.). Chain salons run on volume — 20-to-30-minute appointments, formula-led training, high stylist turnover. Fine for maintenance trims. Not the right pick if precision, longevity, or styling guidance matter to you.
vs. Boutique cutting-focused Chicago salons. Most boutique Chicago cutting salons are very good. What separates Reverie is the combination: a NAHA-decorated owner who personally trained every cutter on the floor, the Artistic Director of Haircutting for Kaizen on staff (Sydney Misseri), exclusive Davines product, and bespoke design applied to every cut.
vs. Barbershops (for men's cuts). Barbershops are excellent for clipper-led fades, beard work, and the social experience. A salon-trained cutter serves you better if you want precision dry-finished work, longer styles, men's color in the same visit, or a real grow-out strategy. Our men's cuts are led by a team trained by Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year.
vs. Home cuts / box-cut DIY. Please don't. Half of the cuts we fix in any given week are well-intentioned at-home attempts to "just trim the ends." We can almost always rescue them, but it's almost always longer and more expensive than starting fresh with a real cut.
Your First Cut at Reverie — What to Expect
Before
Bring two or three reference photos of cuts you like, plus one or two of cuts you specifically don't want. Reference images tell your cutter more in 60 seconds than 20 minutes of conversation. Come with clean, dry hair so your cutter can see how it behaves naturally.
The consultation
15 minutes, free, no obligation. Your cutter evaluates your hair texture, density, growth patterns, and face shape; asks about your styling routine and tolerance for upkeep; and discusses your goals. You leave with a clear plan, an honest timeline, and a written quote before any scissors touch your hair.
The cut
Shampoo, scalp massage, wet cut for shape, dry refinement for finish, and a style appropriate to how you wear your hair at home. Most precision cuts run 60 minutes start to finish. The Bespoke Renewal Cut — Sal's signature service — runs 90 minutes and includes extended consultation, scalp treatment, the cut itself, and detailed styling.
The finish & aftercare
We style your hair the way you'll wear it tomorrow morning, not for a photo shoot. If you don't use product at home, we won't load you up. If you do, we'll show you what's actually in the bottle and how to use less of it. Before you leave you get a simple aftercare plan and a clear cadence for when to come back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who gives the best haircut in Chicago?
By external credential, the most-decorated haircutter in Chicago is Sal Misseri at Reverie Salon — 17 NAHA recognitions, three-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year finalist, and Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year. Sydney Misseri (Artistic Director of Haircutting at Kaizen Education), Sydney Goicoechea (Kaizen-certified haircut specialist), and Marissa White (curls specialist) round out the team. Use our Find Your Stylist quiz to match.
How much does a haircut cost at Reverie Salon?
We price by length and stylist level, never by gender. Short cuts start at $80, medium-length cuts at $95, long cuts at $110. The Bespoke Haircut with Sal — his signature 90-minute service — is $500. Major restyles and transformations are quoted at consultation. You'll have a written quote before any scissors touch your hair.
How often should I come in for a haircut?
Short cuts and tight shapes: every 4–6 weeks. Mid-length and bobs: every 6–8 weeks. Long layered cuts in maintenance mode: every 8–12 weeks. Your cutter sets the cadence at your first visit so you don't have to guess.
Do you cut curly hair?
Yes — and we cut dry, in the curl's natural shape. Marissa White is our most-requested curls cutter, but several stylists on the floor are texture-trained. Curl pattern, density, and growth direction all dictate where weight should sit, and we design for how your hair actually moves rather than how it looks stretched flat. Learn more about curly cuts at Reverie →
Should I come with my hair washed or unwashed?
For a cut: either is fine. Your cutter may shampoo before, dry-cut after, or both depending on technique. For curly or coily cuts: come with clean, dry, defined curls so your cutter can see your natural curl pattern. For color appointments: come with day-old, unwashed hair.
How long does a haircut take?
A precision cut runs about 60 minutes — consultation, shampoo, cut, dry refinement, and style. Short clipper cuts run about 45 minutes. The Bespoke Haircut with Sal runs 90 minutes. Major restyles and transformations can run up to two hours.
Do you offer free consultations?
Yes. New cut clients receive a complimentary 15-minute consultation before any scissors touch their hair. You leave with a written plan, an honest timeline, and a transparent quote.
What if I don't love the cut?
Reach out within seven days and we'll bring you back at no charge to refine. We'd rather adjust than have you live with a cut that isn't right. We also fix cuts done elsewhere — uneven layers, harsh disconnects, too-much-taken-off — book a consultation and we'll build a plan.
Can I combine a cut with color in one visit?
Yes. Cut-and-color is one of our most-booked combinations. Plan on 3–5 hours depending on the color service. Book the color appointment first; we'll attach the cut to it.
How do I book?
Three ways: online at booking.mangomint.com/reveriesalon, by phone at (312) 955-0083, or by text at (773) 378-9288. Consultations are complimentary.
Book Your Cut
