Men's Haircut in Chicago — Reverie Salon
Precision cuts, classic-to-modern grooming, and men's color — from a team led by the only Chicago stylist named Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year.
Most "best men's haircut" lists in Chicago point you to a barbershop. Barbershops are great if all you want is a fade and a beard line. But if you've ever wanted a real consultation about how your hair grows, a cut that looks intentional at week one and week six, or to get color or scalp work done in the same visit, you've outgrown the barbershop. You need a men's-grooming destination led by a stylist who competes — and wins — at the international level on men's hair specifically.
That's what Reverie was built to be. We are a River North studio led by Sal Misseri — the Chicago stylist named Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year, with multiple NAHA recognitions in the men's editorial and men's competition categories specifically. Every men's cut at Reverie is built on that standard. No 15-minute rotation, no clipper-by-rote, no rushed finish.
Why Chicago Men Choose Reverie for Their Haircut
Three things separate a Reverie men's cut from a barbershop cut and from most salon men's services:
1. The credential behind the chair. Sal Misseri is a three-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year finalist, holds 17 NAHA recognitions across cutting, color, men's, and editorial, and was named Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year. He is a Davines Global Artist with NYFW backstage credits (Christian Siriano, Porsche Design). Sal teaches men's cutting in 9+ countries through Kaizen Education, the curriculum he built — meaning the technique used on your hair is the same technique he teaches other professionals.
2. The technique standard on every chair. Every person on our floor — senior stylists and assistants — is Kaizen-trained to the same men's-cutting standard Sal sets and teaches internationally. Scissor-over-comb, clipper-over-comb, point cutting, slide cutting, dry refinement — all in the toolkit. We don't run men's hair through one tool because it's faster; we use the right tool for the cut you actually want.
3. The full-grooming environment. Want to add color, gray blending, a smoothing treatment, or a scalp therapy session to your haircut visit? Most Chicago barbershops can't offer any of it. Most Chicago salons don't take men's grooming seriously enough to be good at it. Reverie does both.

Men's Cuts We Specialize In
Fades & tapers
Skin fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade, drop fade, taper fade. Every Reverie stylist is trained on both clipper and clipper-over-comb techniques. The difference between a great fade and a passable one is how cleanly the transition zones blend — that's a precision-cutting problem, and precision cutting is what Sal teaches in 9+ countries.
Textured crops
The most-requested modern men's cut: short on the sides, longer and textured on top, slight fringe. Looks deliberate when styled, naturally tousled when not. We finish dry to make sure the texture sits the way it will tomorrow morning, not just the way it looks under salon lighting.
Classic side parts & pompadours
Slick, polished, executive. We dry-refine these cuts after the wet cut so the part falls where it should and the volume sits where you want it. Cut for how your hair actually behaves, not for a magazine reference photo.
Longer styles
Mid-length to long men's hair is having a moment. We cut these dry to honor the wave pattern and growth direction — same approach we use on women's curly hair. Whether you're growing it out, maintaining length, or want layered movement, we'll cut for shape and grow-out together.
Buzz, crew, and Caesar
Short cuts have nowhere to hide. We take them seriously — outline detail, hairline shape, and how the cut sits on your head all matter. A precision buzz from a Reverie stylist is not the same product as a 7-minute drop-in.
Men's curly & coily hair
Cut dry, in the curl's natural shape, by stylists trained on textured hair. Curl pattern, density, and growth direction all dictate where weight should sit. If you've been told "we don't really cut curls here" elsewhere, book through our Find Your Stylist quiz — it'll pair you with the right texture-trained stylist for men's curly hair.
Men's Color & Gray Coverage at Reverie
More men are coloring than ever — and almost none of them want it to look like color. The goal is gray blending that reads as "rested" or dimensional highlights that catch light without announcing themselves. That kind of subtlety is harder than blunt color work, not easier. It's exactly what a NAHA-recognized color team is built for.
Gray blending. A toner-and-low-light pass that softens gray to about 50–70% coverage rather than blacking it out. Reads as natural; refreshes every 4–6 weeks. About 30 extra minutes on top of your cut.
Subtle dimension / face-frame highlights. A handful of soft pieces — temples, fringe — to lift the face and add depth without changing your overall color. Lifts low-energy hair instantly. Read about highlights →
Toner-only refresh. A 30-minute pass to cut brassiness, even out summer fade, or neutralize a previous color. Read about gloss treatments →
Full color correction. Box-dye gone wrong, over-processed sides from another salon, banded gray coverage. We fix all of it — Vicki O'Connor (North American Master Colorist) leads our correction work.
Reverie vs. a Chicago Barbershop vs. a Chain Salon
vs. a Chicago barbershop. Barbershops are excellent for clipper-led fades, beard work, and the social experience. The trade-offs: most barbers aren't trained in scissor-over-comb to the level a salon-trained stylist is, can't perform color services, and don't have the consultation depth to plan a six-month grow-out strategy. If your hair sits between "tight fade" and "longer textured layered cut," a salon-trained stylist will serve you better.
vs. a chain salon (Hair Cuttery, Great Clips, etc.). Chain salons run on volume — short appointments, formula training, high stylist turnover. Fine for maintenance trims. Not the right pick if precision, longevity, or styling guidance matter to you.
vs. men's-only Chicago specialists (Chicago Male Salon, Archive, Bespoke Men's Grooming). All good in their own right. The Reverie difference: Sal's external men's-specific credentials — Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year, NAHA men's editorial and competition recognitions — are at the international competition level, and that standard cascades to every stylist on our floor through Kaizen Education. Plus, you can add color, smoothing, or scalp therapy in the same visit.
vs. River North competitors that happen to take men's clients. A salon that does men's cuts because someone asked is different from a salon that takes men's cutting seriously enough to compete on it. Reverie is the latter.
Your First Men's Cut at Reverie — What to Expect
The consultation
15 minutes, free. Your stylist evaluates how your hair grows (cowlicks, density, recession patterns), asks what you do for work, how much time you spend styling in the morning, and what about your current cut you actually want to change. Bring a reference photo if you have one. If you don't, we'll get there from conversation.
The cut itself
Shampoo, scalp massage, cut wet for shape, refine dry for finish. Most men's cuts run about 45 minutes start to finish. The Bespoke Renewal Cut — Sal's signature service — runs 75–90 minutes and includes extended consultation, the cut, scalp treatment, and a detailed style.
The finish
We style your hair the way you'll wear it Monday morning, not for an Instagram reel. If you don't use product at home, we won't load you up with it. If you do, we'll show you what's actually in the bottle and how to use less of it.
Rebook cadence
Tight cuts and fades: 3–4 weeks. Mid-length cuts: 5–7 weeks. Long cuts in maintenance mode: 8–12 weeks. Your stylist sets the cadence at the first visit so you don't have to think about it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a men's haircut cost at Reverie Salon?
We price by length and stylist level, not gender — short cuts (pixie or short clipper cuts) start at $80. The Bespoke Haircut with Sal, his signature 90-minute service, is $500. Add-ons (color, gray blending, scalp therapy, beard detail) are priced separately. You'll have a written quote before any scissors touch hair.
Who gives the best men's haircut in Chicago?
By external credential, Sal Misseri at Reverie Salon — he was named Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year and holds multiple NAHA recognitions in men's editorial and competition categories. Every other Reverie stylist trains through Sal's Kaizen Education curriculum, so the men's cutting standard cascades across the entire team. Use our Find Your Stylist quiz to match.
Do you do fades and clipper work, or just scissor cuts?
Both. Every Reverie stylist is trained in clipper-over-comb, skin fades, tapers, scissor-over-comb, point cutting, slide cutting, and dry refinement. The cut you book determines the tool — we don't run every cut through clippers because it's faster.
Should I go to a barbershop or a salon for my haircut?
Barbershops are excellent for fades, beard work, and the in-and-out social experience. A salon-trained stylist serves you better if you want a precision dry-finished cut, longer styles, men's color or gray blending, a real consultation about grow-out strategy, or to combine your haircut with other grooming services in one visit.
How long does a men's haircut take?
About 45 minutes for a precision cut — shampoo, cut wet, refine dry, style. Add 30–45 minutes if you're combining the cut with color or gray blending. The Bespoke Renewal Cut runs 75–90 minutes.
Do you do men's color and gray blending?
Yes — and we take it seriously. Gray blending starts at $75 as an add-on, runs 30–45 minutes on top of your cut, and softens gray to about 50–70% coverage so it reads as natural rather than colored. Subtle dimension highlights, toner refreshes, and full color corrections are also available.
How often should I come in?
Tight cuts and fades: every 3–4 weeks. Mid-length cuts: every 5–7 weeks. Longer styles in maintenance mode: every 8–12 weeks. Your stylist sets the cadence at your first visit.
Can I add a scalp treatment or beard trim?
Yes. Our scalp therapy / head spa add-on starts at $50 and runs 20 extra minutes — excellent for thinning concerns, scalp irritation, or just a deep reset. Beard trim and detail is also available as an add-on.
What if I don't love the cut?
Reach out within seven days and we'll bring you back at no charge to refine. We'd rather adjust than have you live with a cut that isn't right.
