Foilayage Chicago | Reverie Salon

Foilayage in Chicago

Foilayage is a blonding technique that combines foil highlights and balayage in one service: lightener is applied in foils near the root for maximum lift, then hand-painted freehand through the mid-lengths and ends so there is no hard line where the two meet. It gives you the brightness of foils with the seamless grow-out of balayage. At Reverie Salon in River North, Chicago, foilayage starts at $165 for a partial and $215 for a full, before toner — and it is our most-requested blonding service.

You will also see it written foilyage or foil balayage. It is the same technique.

Why it works so well

Traditional foil highlights give you brightness but grow out with a hard line. Traditional balayage gives you seamless grow-out but cannot always reach the same level of lift, especially near the root where the scalp's heat and the hair's density work against freehand product.

Foilayage takes both. The foil portion lifts the root area efficiently using trapped heat. Once that section is placed, your colorist switches to freehand painting through the rest of the strand, feathering the lightener so there is no stop where foil meets balayage. The result reads as one cohesive technique rather than two stitched together.

Who it is for

Most people, honestly. If you want bright, dimensional blonde that does not demand a touch-up every six weeks, foilayage is usually the right call. It works on every hair color and length, and it is especially popular with clients who want to be lighter around the face without committing to full foils everywhere.

It is also the technique most people are describing when they ask for lived-in blonde — depth kept at the root, brightness placed where the light hits, and a grow-out that still looks intentional months later.

Foilayage vs. balayage vs. highlights

Technique Brightness Grow-out Starting price
Foil highlights Highest 6–8 weeks, visible line from $165 partial / $215 full
Foilayage High 10–14 weeks, soft from $165 partial / $215 full
Balayage Moderate, natural 10–14 weeks, softest from $165 partial / $215 full

Toning is a separate step

Every lightening service at Reverie finishes with a toner to set the exact shade — icy, ash, beige, honey or golden. Toner is priced separately, from $75, and quoted in writing before the appointment starts. It is never billed as included.

Maintenance

Most foilayage clients come back every 10 to 14 weeks. A gloss or toner refresh at the halfway point keeps the tone where it should be, particularly in Chicago where hard water pulls blonde warm faster than most people expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is foilayage?

Foilayage is a blonding technique that combines foil highlights and balayage in one service — lightener applied in foils near the root for maximum lift, then hand-painted freehand through the mid-lengths and ends so the two blend without a hard line.

How much does foilayage cost in Chicago?

At Reverie Salon in River North, partial foilayage starts at $165 and full foilayage at $215. Toner is added to every lightening service and priced separately, from $75.

What is the difference between foilayage and balayage?

Balayage is painted entirely freehand, which gives the softest, most natural result but limits how much lift is possible near the root. Foilayage adds foils at the root for brightness, then hand-paints the rest — so it is brighter than balayage while still growing out softly.

How long does foilayage last?

Most foilayage clients return every 10 to 14 weeks. A gloss or toner refresh at the halfway point keeps the tone correct between appointments.

Is foilayage better for dark hair?

It is often the better choice on darker hair, because the foils do the heavy lifting at the root where freehand product struggles, while the painted ends keep the result from looking striped.

Is toner included with foilayage?

No. Toner is added to every lightening service at Reverie but is always priced separately, from $75, and quoted in writing before the appointment begins.
