Ombré is a gradient — darker at the root, lighter through the ends. Unlike balayage, which blends color throughout the hair in a scattered pattern, ombré is a more deliberate, visible transition from dark to light. It’s bold, it’s striking, and it’s one of the most low-maintenance color options you can choose.

Ombré vs. sombré

Ombré is the dramatic version — a noticeable shift from your natural color to significantly lighter ends. Sombré (soft ombré) is subtler — a gentler transition that blends more gradually. Both grow out seamlessly because the color starts well below the root.

Who it works for

Ombré works on every hair color and length, though you need at least shoulder-length hair for the gradient to read properly. It’s especially popular with brunettes who want to add warmth or brightness to their ends without committing to full highlights.

Maintenance is minimal — most ombré clients come back every 14–20 weeks. Some barely come back at all because the grow-out is literally the design.
