Tape-In Hair Extensions in Chicago
Tape-in extensions are thin wefts backed with medical-grade adhesive, sandwiched in pairs around a fine section of your own hair. They are the fastest method to install, the flattest against the head, and the easiest to remove cleanly — which makes them the usual starting point for someone trying extensions for the first time.
How a Tape-In Install Works
Your stylist takes a very fine section of hair and places one taped weft underneath it and one on top, pressing them together so your own hair is sandwiched between. There is no sewing, no bead and no heat on your hair. A full head is typically 40 to 60 wefts and goes in far faster than any individual-strand method.
Removal uses a solvent that breaks the adhesive down, so the wefts slide out without pulling. The hair is then re-taped and reused.
Who Tape-Ins Suit
It is usually the right pick if: this is your first set and you would rather not commit to a long install, you want a flat, comfortable attachment you can sleep on easily, or you want the shortest appointment and the gentlest removal.
It is usually the wrong pick if: you are very active and constantly washing — adhesive is the part that suffers from heavy washing and oil — or you want the longest gap between maintenance visits, where K-tips win.
Maintenance and Longevity
Tape-ins are moved up every 6 to 8 weeks. At each move-up the wefts are removed, re-taped with fresh adhesive and re-applied — the hair itself is reused.
The hair lasts 9 to 12 months. Oil is the enemy of the adhesive: keep conditioner and oil away from the tape line itself and the bond holds far better.
What It Costs
Pricing at Reverie is by the work and the hair, never by gender.
- Consultation — $35. Your hair is measured, color-matched and quoted in writing. Nothing is ordered before you see the number.
- Installation — from $300, plus the cost of the hair itself, which is custom-ordered for you.
- Move-ups / maintenance — from $150.
- Removal — from $150.
The hair is the variable, not the labor. Length and density drive it, which is why we quote after we have seen and measured your hair rather than before.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do tape-in extensions cost in Chicago?
At Reverie Salon in River North, tape-in installation starts at $300 plus the cost of the hair, which is custom-ordered for you. The $35 consultation covers your color match, measurement and an exact written quote. Move-ups and removals each start at $150.
Do tape-in extensions damage your hair?
Tape-ins are among the gentlest methods when they are removed properly, because the adhesive is dissolved rather than pulled. Damage almost always comes from removing them at home, from sections taken too large, or from leaving them well past the move-up window.
How long does a tape-in install take?
Usually 90 minutes to two and a half hours — the fastest of the methods we offer. That is a large part of why it is the common first set.
How often do tape-ins need to be moved up?
Every 6 to 8 weeks. At the move-up the wefts come out, get fresh adhesive and go back in. The hair is reused, so you are paying for the maintenance rather than for new hair.
Can you swim and work out with tape-in extensions?
Yes, with sensible care. Rinse chlorine and salt out promptly, keep oils and conditioner off the tape line, and let hair dry rather than tying it up tightly while wet. Heavy daily washing is the one habit that shortens the life of the adhesive.
Are tape-in extensions reusable?
Yes. The hair is re-taped at each move-up and reused for as long as it stays in good condition — typically 9 to 12 months. Only the adhesive is replaced.
