Pixie Cut Chicago

Precision pixie cuts at Reverie Salon in River North. Short cuts have nowhere to hide — every line, every weight, every transition matters. A NAHA-honored cutting team.

A pixie is the most exposed haircut a stylist can do. There's nothing to fall over a mistake, no length to cover a soft line, no styling product that hides a graduation built half a degree wrong. The outline at the nape and around the ears is on display every time you turn your head. The crown weight is on display every time you tilt your chin. A pixie either holds together or it doesn't — and the difference between a good one and an average one is visible from across a room.

That's why pixies go to our most experienced cutters. Every stylist on our floor is Kaizen Education trained — Kaizen is the global education company I founded, and the precision curriculum is the same one I teach in 9+ countries. Pixies require all of it: scissor-over-comb control, clipper-over-comb transitions, point cutting for interior softness, and the ability to read a growth pattern before the first section is taken.

Pixie Variations We Cut at Reverie

"Pixie" covers a range of short cuts, each with its own shape, weight strategy, and personality. Here's what we cut and how each one wears.

Classic Pixie

The reference point. Short on the sides and back, slightly longer on top, with a clean perimeter at the ears and nape. Reads timeless and elegant. Best on most face shapes when the proportions are tuned correctly. The version that ages well across years rather than chasing trends.

Edgy Pixie

Sharper graduation through the sides, more aggressive disconnection between top and back, sometimes paired with very short or shaved sections. Reads modern and confident. Requires a stylist comfortable with clipper work and willing to take the lines all the way.

Soft / Feminine Pixie

Softer perimeter, more length through the top and fringe, gentler transitions. Designed to retain femininity in the shape while still living in the short-cut category. The pixie that converts clients who've been hesitant about going short.

Long Pixie

The longest version of the cut — top length grazing the cheekbones or chin, sides still short but not shaved. Sits at the bridge between pixie and short bob. Excellent transition cut for clients growing out a true pixie or moving in from a longer style.

Undercut Pixie

A clear disconnection between a longer top and a clipper-shortened underneath section. Can be subtle (hidden when the top falls down) or overt (visible all the time). Requires precise mapping of where the disconnection sits so it doesn't peek out at the wrong angle.

Textured Pixie

Heavy interior texturizing across the top section — point cut, slide cut, or razor depending on the hair. Reads piecey and lived-in. The most low-maintenance pixie because the texture forgives natural movement and air-dries well.

Who's Cutting Your Pixie

Pixies require precision cutting at the highest level. We send them to our most experienced cutters.

Sal Misseri — Owner & Creative Director

17-time NAHA honoree across cutting, color, men's, and editorial. Three-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year finalist. Estetica's Men's Hairstylist of the Year. Davines Global Artist. NYFW backstage credits including Christian Siriano and Porsche Design. Founder of Kaizen Education. Short cuts — pixies, crops, men's editorial — are where my work has the longest track record.

Sydney Misseri — Artistic Director of Haircutting, Kaizen Education

Sassoon-trained, with HOB Salon London experience. Two years training directly under me. As Kaizen's Artistic Director of Haircutting, Sydney teaches the precision curriculum that produces clean short work. Pixies are one of her strengths.

Sydney Goicoechea — Kaizen-Certified Haircut Specialist

Cuts-first focus. Strong fit for clients who want a stylist whose entire practice is cutting work — pixies, bobs, men's, transition cuts. Books well in advance.

Pricing — Length-Based, Not Gender-Based

One note on how we price. Reverie has been gender-neutral on cut pricing for about 15 years — we were one of the first Chicago salons to switch. We price by length, not by gender. A woman with a pixie pays the same as a man with a pixie. It's a values position as much as a pricing one.

Pixies sit in the short-cut tier. The same starting price applies regardless of who's wearing the cut.

Length Tier Starting Price Fits Which Pixies
Short from $80 Classic, edgy, soft, undercut, textured pixies
Medium from $95 Long pixies grazing chin or cheekbone

Pricing varies by stylist level. You'll receive a transparent quote at your consultation before scissors touch your hair. Senior stylist and director-level pricing is higher; Kaizen-certified specialists sit in the starting range.

Pixie vs. Crop — What's the Actual Difference?

Clients often use "pixie" and "crop" interchangeably. They're not the same cut. The difference matters because the styling reality is different.

Pixie Crop
Top length Longer — 2 to 5 inches Shorter — typically under 2 inches
Shape philosophy Movement and softness on top Sculpted, structural across the head
Styling time 5–10 minutes 2–5 minutes
Maintenance cadence 5–7 weeks 3–5 weeks
Forgiveness More — length softens lines Less — every line is exposed

Your First Pixie at Reverie — What to Expect

Before

Bring reference photos — ideally three or four pixies you like, plus one or two you don't. The differences between pixie variations are small visually but huge structurally. Photos shortcut the conversation. Come with clean, dry hair so we can see how your growth pattern behaves.

The consultation

Your stylist maps your growth patterns at the crown, nape, and hairline. We look at face shape, ear position, neck length, and density. We talk about your styling habits at home — a pixie that needs 15 minutes of daily styling you'll never give it is a wrong pixie. Growth-pattern accommodation is the part that determines whether the cut sits naturally or fights you every morning.

The cut

Most pixies run 45–60 minutes. Scissor-over-comb for the transitions, clipper-over-comb where it's appropriate, point cutting for interior softness. Dry refinement is non-negotiable on a pixie — we cut wet for the structure, dry-cut for the finishing accuracy.

The finish

Pixies finish with light product — a cream, a paste, or a texture spray, depending on the variation. Your stylist walks you through exactly how to dry it and style it at home, including the angle and direction of the airflow that holds the shape best.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pixie cut cost at Reverie?

Standard pixies start at $80 (short-cut tier). Long pixies that approach mid-length may move into the medium tier ($95). Pricing varies by stylist level — you'll receive a written quote at consultation before scissors touch your hair.

Will a pixie suit my face shape?

Most face shapes work with the right pixie variation. Oval faces are the easiest fit. Round faces benefit from height and length on top to elongate. Square faces work well with softer pixies that avoid sharp parallel lines to the jaw. Long faces are flattered by pixies with a heavier fringe. Face shape is one input — ear position, neck length, and bone structure matter too.

How long does a pixie appointment take?

Plan on 45–60 minutes for a standard pixie. Your first pixie with a new stylist will run longer because of the deeper consultation. If you want our signature 90-minute experience, see the Bespoke Renewal Cut.

How often do I need to come in?

Pixies hold their shape for 5–7 weeks before the outline starts losing definition. If you want the cut to look clean continuously, plan on 6-week visits. If you don't mind some grow-out softening, stretch to 8.

Can a pixie work with curly hair?

Yes — curly pixies are some of the most striking cuts we do. The technique is different from straight-hair pixies. We typically cut dry on tight curls to see exactly where each piece is going to sit, and the shape is built around the curl pattern rather than against it.

What if I have a strong cowlick at the crown?

Pixies and crown cowlicks are a classic challenge. The cut has to be designed to work with the cowlick, not pretend it isn't there. We identify it in the consultation, plan the directional movement around it, and choose a variation that uses the cowlick rather than fighting it. Most clients with strong cowlicks end up with better pixies than clients with neutral patterns — the cowlick gives the shape its energy.

Can I grow a pixie out without it looking awkward?

Yes, but it requires intentional maintenance cuts during the grow-out, not zero cuts. We design transition cuts that re-balance the shape every 6–8 weeks so you move through the awkward in-between phases with cuts that actually look like cuts. Most clients move pixie → long pixie → short bob → bob over about a year.

Can I get color the same day as my pixie?

Yes — color first, then cut. Plan on 2.5–4 hours total. See our colorist team for color options.
