Keratin Treatment Chicago

Keratin & Smoothing Treatments in Chicago

A keratin treatment is the longer-lasting, deeper-acting version of a smoothing treatment. It infuses the hair with keratin protein and seals it in with heat, dramatically reducing frizz, cutting blow-dry time in half, and giving you hair that cooperates with you instead of against you. Results last 3–6 months.

How it works

We apply a keratin formula throughout the hair, then use a flat iron at a specific temperature to bond the protein into the shaft. The treatment fills gaps in the cuticle that cause frizz and roughness, leaving the surface smooth and the interior stronger. Your curl pattern relaxes but doesn’t disappear — think of it as turning the volume down on your frizz by about 70%.

The trade-offs

The appointment takes 2–4 hours. Most formulas require you to avoid washing your hair or putting it up for 48–72 hours afterward. Those first few days are annoying — I won’t pretend otherwise. After that, you’re in the best hair stretch of your life for months.

We only use formaldehyde-free formulations. If that’s a concern — and it should be — ask us what product we use. We’re happy to tell you.

Keratin vs. Brazilian Blowout

A Brazilian Blowout is faster, has no waiting period, but lasts 10–12 weeks instead of 3–6 months. If you want maximum duration, go keratin. If you can’t deal with the post-treatment restrictions, go Brazilian Blowout. We’ll help you choose during the consultation.

Keratin vs. permanent hair straightening

They are not the same thing, and the difference matters. Permanent straightening (Japanese thermal straightening, chemical relaxers) breaks and re-forms the hair’s internal bonds — the result is bone-straight, irreversible on treated lengths, and grows out with a visible line between straight and natural texture. A keratin smoothing treatment coats and reinforces the hair instead: frizz drops dramatically, your natural movement stays, and it fades out gradually with zero demarcation line. Reverie offers keratin smoothing rather than chemical relaxers because it delivers the smoothness most clients actually want while protecting the hair’s integrity — which also keeps your options open for color and balayage work.

Smoothing options at every level

Not every frizz problem needs the full treatment. The Keratin Blowout (from $200) is a same-day smoothing service with no waiting period — great before events or travel. Color Lock Keratin (from $150) pairs smoothing with a color service to seal tone and shine. And if your hair needs moisture more than smoothing, our hair & scalp therapy deep treatments may be the better prescription — your stylist will tell you honestly which one your hair actually needs.

What protects the treatment once you leave

Sulfates strip a keratin treatment faster than anything else you can do to it. Months of smoothness can come off a service in a few washes, and the wrong shampoo is far and away the most common reason someone tells us their keratin “didn’t last.”

So everyone leaves here on a sulfate-free, salt-free smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Coarse or very frizz-prone hair does well on the Milbon Anti-Frizz line, which handles Chicago humidity without weighing the smooth down. Ask at checkout and we’ll match it to the formula we actually used on you — it isn’t the same recommendation for everyone.

Pricing

The Keratin Smoothing Treatment at Reverie starts at $500. We also offer a Keratin Blowout from $200 and Color Lock Keratin from $150 — your stylist will recommend the right option for your hair at your consultation, with an exact written quote before we begin.

The aftercare that decides how long this lasts

Three things go home with a keratin client. This is the Medium weight of the Milbon Smoothing line, which suits most hair — ask your stylist about the Fine or Coarse version if yours sits at either end.

  • Milbon Smoothing Shampoo Medium — $30.40. The shampoo is the whole ballgame here. This one cleanses without stripping, so you are not rinsing the treatment down the drain. Soak the hair a full 90 seconds before you lather — Milbon is specific about that and it genuinely changes the result.
  • Milbon Smoothing Treatment Medium — $42.40. Built around macadamia oil and collagen. It keeps the ends smooth as the keratin gradually fades, so you don't hit a rough patch around month three while the rest still looks good.
  • Milbon Anti-Frizz Humidity Blocking Oil — $44.40. Chicago summers are what undo a smoothing treatment. Five botanical oils that keep humidity from getting back into the hair, and it doubles as heat protection on the days you still reach for an iron.
