These two services solve the same problem — wanting to wake up with your eyes already "done" — in opposite ways, and the right pick comes down to your lashes, your maintenance tolerance, and the look you're after. Here's the honest comparison we give clients at Reverie.
The core difference
A lash lift works with what you have. It's a perm for your natural lashes: a gentle solution sets them in an upward curl from the root, so they look longer and your eyes look more open — no added fibers, nothing to maintain daily. Add a tint and you get the mascara effect without mascara.
Extensions add what you don't have. Individual synthetic fibers are bonded to each natural lash for genuine added length and volume. The result is more dramatic — and more demanding.
Maintenance, honestly
This is where most people should make the decision. A lash lift lasts 6–8 weeks (your natural lash growth cycle) and asks almost nothing of you — keep them dry for the first 24 hours, then live your life. Extensions need refills every 2–3 weeks, careful cleansing, no oil-based products near the eyes, and some sleeping-position discipline. Skip refills and the grow-out looks patchy. Gorgeous, but it's a standing appointment, not a treatment.
Cost over a year
At Reverie: a lash lift is from $95 (lift + tint from $98) roughly every 7 weeks — call it 7–8 appointments a year. Extensions start at $200 plus regular refills — a meaningfully bigger annual commitment. Neither is wrong; they're just different budgets for different looks.
Which should you book?
Book a lift if: you have decent natural lashes that grow straight or downward, you want low-maintenance polish, you swim or work out a lot, or you've had extensions and hated the upkeep. This is the right starting point for most first-timers.
Book extensions if: you want visible, undeniable drama, you're comfortable with refill appointments, and your natural lashes are healthy enough to support them.
Either way, pair it with your brows. A brow lamination or wax + tint in the same visit frames the whole effect — lashes and brows together is the single best no-makeup upgrade there is.
One safety note
Both services belong in licensed hands. Lift solution and lash adhesive sit millimeters from your eye — at Reverie they're performed by Elizabeth, our licensed esthetician, in our River North studio, with patch testing available for tints on request.
