I get asked this constantly. And I always start with the same honest answer: you can't actually make your hair grow faster. What you can do is stop it from breaking, which has the same practical effect — more length over time.
Hair grows about half an inch a month. That's genetics. You can't supplement or product your way past it. But most people aren't losing length because their hair grows slowly — they're losing it because it's breaking off faster than it grows.
Why your hair isn't getting longer
Breakage. That's it. That's the answer 90% of the time. Heat damage, over-processing, rough brushing, elastic bands, sleeping on cotton pillowcases — all of it creates micro-damage that accumulates until your ends snap off. You grow half an inch and break off half an inch. Net gain: zero.
The other 10%? Nutritional deficiencies, hormonal issues, medication side effects, or stress. If you're doing everything right externally and your hair still isn't growing, see your doctor. Get bloodwork. Check iron, vitamin D, thyroid.
What actually works
Stop skipping trims. I know this sounds counterintuitive — "I want longer hair so I should… cut it?" Yes. A quarter-inch trim every 10–12 weeks removes split ends before they travel up the shaft. Split ends don't heal. They just split further. A small trim now saves you a big chop later.
Reduce heat. Not eliminate — I'm realistic. But if you're flat-ironing at 450°F every day, your hair is cooked. Lower your temperature to 300–350°F, always use heat protectant, and try to give your hair 2–3 heat-free days a week.
Fix your bonds. K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is the single best thing I've seen for length retention. It reconnects broken keratin chains, making hair stronger and more resistant to breakage. Use it once a week after shampooing. Four minutes, no rinse.
Be gentler than you think you need to be. Wet hair is fragile. Use a wide-tooth comb, start from the ends, work up. Never rip through tangles. Swap elastic hair ties for silk scrunchies or spiral coils. Sleep on silk or satin.
Supplements: the honest truth
Biotin gets all the attention, but unless you're actually deficient (most people aren't), supplementing won't do much. Same with collagen — the research is thin and the marketing is thick.
What does make a difference: getting enough protein in your diet (hair is keratin, which is protein), staying hydrated, and making sure your iron and vitamin D levels are adequate. If those basics are covered, fancy supplements are mostly expensive urine.
The products that actually help with length
Hydrating shampoo and conditioner — we use Davines NOUNOU on most clients going for length. It keeps hair flexible and less prone to snapping.
A good leave-in oil for the ends — Davines OI Oil is our go-to. Lightweight, protective, and it makes detangling easier so you're not ripping through knots.
Weekly deep conditioning. Not optional. Not "when I remember." Every week.
How long until I see results?
If you fix the breakage problem, you'll notice a difference in about 3 months. That's roughly 1.5 inches of new growth that actually stays instead of breaking off. By six months, people will start commenting.
Patience is the hardest part. But it's also the only part that actually works. Come see us at Reverie Salon for a consultation — we'll assess your hair's current condition and give you an honest plan for getting where you want to be.
