I'm not going to tell you to light candles and run a bath. You know how to relax. What I am going to tell you is that a deliberate hair care routine — even just 30 minutes once a week — is the difference between hair that cooperates and hair that fights you every morning.

Here's what a real self-care hair ritual looks like, from someone who does this professionally.

Start with a scalp treatment

Your scalp is skin. It gets buildup, oil, dead cells — all the things your face gets. Most people never exfoliate it. Once a week, before you shampoo, spend two minutes massaging a scalp scrub or treatment oil into your roots. This isn't spa fluff — product buildup on the scalp literally blocks hair follicles and slows healthy growth.

We use Davines Naturaltech scalp treatments in the salon, and they're available for home use. The Energizing line is especially good if you're noticing thinning.

Shampoo properly (most people don't)

Shampoo goes on your scalp, not your lengths. Lather at the roots, let the suds run down through the rest of your hair as you rinse. Scrubbing shampoo into your mid-lengths and ends strips moisture from the parts of your hair that need it most.

And don't rush the rinse. Leftover shampoo causes itchiness, flaking, and dullness. Thirty seconds longer under the water makes a real difference.

Condition like you mean it

Conditioner goes on your mid-lengths and ends — not your roots (that causes greasiness). Leave it on for at least 2–3 minutes. If you're just slapping it on and rinsing immediately, you're wasting your money.

Once a week, swap your regular conditioner for a deep mask. Davines NOUNOU Hair Mask for hydration, or a K18 treatment for repair. These aren't interchangeable — hydration adds moisture, repair rebuilds structure. Most people need both at different times.

Detangle with care

Wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends, working up. Never start at the roots and pull down — that's how you snap off healthy hair. If you hit a tangle, hold the hair above the knot and work through it gently. A little Davines OI Oil on damp hair makes this dramatically easier.

Air dry when you can

I know not everyone has time. But one day a week without heat lets your hair recover. If you must blow-dry, use a medium setting and keep the dryer moving. Parking it in one spot for ten seconds at maximum heat is a fast track to damage.

The part everyone skips: the ends

A few drops of a lightweight oil on your dry ends before bed. That's it. Takes ten seconds. Protects against friction from your pillowcase (upgrade to silk or satin if you haven't already) and keeps ends from getting brittle between trims.

Make it sustainable

The best hair care routine is the one you actually do. If you can only commit to a weekly deep conditioning and being gentler with your detangling, that's enough to see real improvement. You don't need a 12-step ritual — you need consistency with the basics.
