If you follow hair color on Instagram or TikTok, you may have seen the term "AirTouch" appearing more and more. It's not just a trend — it's a genuinely different coloring technique that produces remarkable results, especially for clients who want the most natural-looking, seamlessly blended color possible.

At Reverie Salon in River North, Chicago, we offer AirTouch balayage for clients who want to take their color to the next level.

What Is AirTouch?

AirTouch is an advanced hair coloring technique developed in Russia that uses a blow dryer as part of the coloring process. Here's how it works:

  1. The colorist sections the hair as they would for traditional balayage
  2. Before applying any color, they use a blow dryer to direct air at the section — this removes the fine, soft, downy hairs while leaving only the coarser, stronger strands
  3. Lightener is then applied only to those remaining coarser hairs
  4. The result: color is placed with extreme precision on only the strands that will hold and show it best

How Is It Different from Regular Balayage?

Both techniques are freehand and create a natural result — but AirTouch takes it further. Because only the coarser strands receive color (the fine hairs "blow away" before application), the transition from colored to uncolored hair is even more feathered and gradual. The line between your natural base and the lightened sections is essentially invisible.

Regular balayage: Beautiful, natural-looking, soft grow-out. AirTouch: Even softer, even more seamless, almost indistinguishable from natural hair variation.

Who Is AirTouch Right For?

AirTouch is ideal for:

  • Clients who want the most natural possible result
  • Darker-haired clients who want subtle brightening without anything looking "done"
  • Anyone who's tried balayage before and wants an elevated version
  • Clients who prioritize low maintenance above all else

AirTouch is especially stunning on brunettes, where the feathered lightening creates exceptional depth and dimension.

How Long Does AirTouch Last?

AirTouch typically lasts even longer than traditional balayage — many clients go 5–7 months between appointments. Because the technique is so precise and the transition so gradual, grow-out is virtually undetectable.

Pricing and Consultation

AirTouch is a specialized technique that requires additional skill and time. Pricing is always assessed at consultation based on your hair's length, density and desired result.

We always recommend a consultation before booking AirTouch — it's the best way to see if it's the right fit for your hair and goals.
