A head spa is a deeply relaxing hair and scalp treatment: warm water, a long scalp massage, steam, and professional-grade products chosen for your hair — usually 45 to 90 minutes of being properly looked after. It's the wellness trend that actually earns most (not all) of its hype, and I'll be honest about which parts are which.

If your feed has served you videos of someone reclined under a little waterfall halo looking transcendently relaxed — that's the one. Here's what's actually happening in those videos.

What a session looks like

It starts with your stylist looking at your hair — how it feels between their fingers, how it's sitting, what you've been putting on it. No machine, no screen, no report. Just a professional deciding what your hair wants today, which is why no two head spas are quite the same.

Then the deep cleanse: a clarifying wash that lifts months of accumulated product, dry shampoo, and hard-water minerals — and if you live in Chicago, that last one is doing real work, because our hard water leaves deposits on everything, your hair included. Then the centerpiece: a long, genuinely skilled scalp massage, usually paired with steam to soften everything, and finished with the treatment your stylist chose — hydrating, balancing, or replenishing.

What's genuinely real

Three things hold up without any hand-waving. First, the cleanse: hair carrying a film of product and mineral deposits looks and feels heavy, and a deep professional wash resets it in a way your daily shower doesn't. Second, the products: professional-grade treatments applied by someone who knows exactly how to use them do more in one appointment than a shelf of bottles at home does in a month. Third — and don't underrate this one — an hour of skilled head massage is one of the most purely pleasurable things money can buy. People float out of these appointments.

Hair comes out softer, lighter, and shinier, and it stays that way for days.

What's hyped

Here's the honest part. A head spa is not medicine, and it is not a treatment for anything. Anyone promising you a permanent transformation is selling relaxation dressed up as something it isn't. What it actually is: an hour of real luxury that leaves your hair better than it was that morning. That's worth a lot. It's just not a miracle, and you deserve to know the difference before you book.

Who should try it

Anyone with a dry-shampoo habit, hair that feels heavy, a stressful job, or simple curiosity. It's one of the few salon services that's purely about how you feel walking out, not how you look — though your hair does shine differently afterward.

What ours costs

Our version is called Head Spa with blowdry: 75 minutes, $200 — the same price with every stylist who offers it, and it finishes with a professional blow-dry. There is no consultation to book first and nothing to assess; you just book it. If you'd rather add something shorter to a cut or colour appointment you already have, we also do two hair and scalp treatments at $30 and $50 as add-ons — those go on top of another service rather than standing alone. Our scalp treatment page lays out the difference.
