Your scalp is the foundation of everything. I’ve been saying this for years, and only recently has the beauty industry caught up. You can use the best shampoo, the best treatments, the best styling products — but if your scalp isn’t healthy, your hair can’t be either.
Your scalp is skin, not just a platform for hair
Think about how much effort people put into their facial skincare routine. Cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, treating. Now think about how most people treat their scalp: they pour shampoo on it and hope for the best.
Your scalp has the same needs as the skin on your face. It gets oily, it gets dry, it develops buildup, dead cells accumulate, pores clog. When scalp pores (follicles) are clogged or inflamed, hair can’t grow optimally. It’s that simple.
Signs your scalp needs attention
Persistent itching that isn’t solved by switching shampoos. Visible flaking — either dry flakes or oily, yellowish ones. Tenderness or tightness. Visible redness when you part your hair. Oiliness that returns within hours of washing. Hair that feels limp at the root no matter what you do.
Any of these suggest your scalp isn’t in good shape, and your hair is probably being affected even if you haven’t connected the two.
The basics nobody does
Actually scrub your scalp. Use your fingertips (not nails) and really massage the shampoo in. Most people just sort of pat shampoo on top and rinse. You need mechanical action to break up buildup and stimulate circulation. 60 seconds of real scrubbing makes a difference.
Double cleanse when needed. If your hair is very oily, if you use a lot of product, or if it’s been more than two days since your last wash — the first shampoo removes surface grime, the second actually cleans. It’s the same concept as double-cleansing your face.
Exfoliate weekly. A scalp scrub or chemical exfoliant once a week removes dead skin cells and product buildup that regular shampoo doesn’t fully address. This is especially important if you use dry shampoo regularly — that stuff accumulates.
What we do at Reverie
Davines Naturaltech is our scalp care line. It’s not the prettiest thing we carry and it doesn’t get as much attention as color products or styling tools. But it’s the line that quietly transforms hair by fixing what’s happening at the root — literally.
Energizing for thinning or sluggish growth. Calming for sensitive or reactive scalps. Purifying for oily scalps with buildup. Nourishing for dry, flaky scalps. Each targets a specific issue rather than trying to be everything for everyone.
We offer scalp treatments as add-ons to color or cut appointments. It takes an extra 10–15 minutes and makes a noticeable difference in how your hair looks and feels for the weeks that follow.
Scalp massage: underrated
Two minutes of scalp massage daily increases blood flow to the follicles. Better blood flow means more nutrients and oxygen reaching the cells that produce your hair. There’s research showing regular scalp massage can increase hair thickness over time.
You can do it dry, or with a few drops of jojoba oil. Use your fingertips and move the scalp — don’t just rub over the surface, actually move the skin. It should feel like a mild stretch.
Start at the scalp
Next time your hair isn’t cooperating, before you blame your products or your genetics, consider whether your scalp is getting what it needs. Book at Reverie and ask about a scalp assessment. We’ll tell you exactly what’s going on and what to do about it.
