The honest answer: virgin (never-colored) medium-brown hair can often reach a beautiful blonde in one long session. Previously colored dark hair usually can't — not without damage you'll regret. The single biggest factor isn't your natural color; it's your hair's history. Here's how we actually assess it in the chair, and why the colorists who tell you "yes, one session, no problem" before touching your hair are the ones to walk away from.
Why history beats natural color
Lightener removes pigment — but artificial pigment from old box dye or salon color is far more stubborn than natural pigment, and it lifts unevenly. Virgin hair lifts predictably. Hair with two years of dye layered through the mid-lengths lifts in patches, pulls orange where the old color grips, and needs far more processing to even out. That's why a colorist's first questions are about the last two years of your hair, not the photo you brought.
What one session can really do
Realistic in one visit: virgin brown to a dimensional, lived-in blonde (think balayage with depth at the root); dark blonde to bright blonde; brown to "bronde."
Usually two or three visits: colored dark brown or black to any real blonde; anything to platinum; box-dye history to cool blonde. Between sessions your hair recovers, and each pass gets you cleaner, brighter, healthier lift.
The session itself is long either way: plan on 3–5 hours for a major lightening appointment.
Why we'll sometimes tell you no
Hair has a structural limit. Push past it chasing one-day platinum and you get gummy, breaking hair that no bond builder can rescue — the only fix left is scissors. A multi-session plan with bond care in the bowl gets you to the same destination with hair that still moves and shines when you arrive. Slower is genuinely faster.
